Food fraud is a big and growing problem, costing the global food industry an estimated US$30 to $40 billion every year. [1] Food Fraud, or what the FDA calls “Economically Motivated Adulteration (EMA),” is the intentional sale of food products that are not up to recognized standards for economic gain. The ramifications of Food Fraud can range from damage to brand reputations, damage to revenue for food retail businesses and processing establishments, to health What is Food Fraud? Definition of Food Fraud: When a company sells the food items with ingredients that are not acceptable by the masses and are against what has been advertised, then the company is said to be indulging in a food fraud. Food fraud not only causes huge financial and reputational damage to the businesses that are caught selling these counterfeits – but can cause dangerous and sometimes deadly effects for consumers. In this blog post, we investigate why food fraud happens, the impact that it has on both the economy and consumers and what you can do to prevent it. Food safety, food defense, and food fraud risk assessments consider different criteria in order to determine the degree of situational risk for each criteria and the measures that need to be implemented to mitigate that risk.
